weights

Hi everyone,
First of all let me wish you all a very Merry Christmas (well a belated one) and wish you all the very best for 2010.
I am a complete novice to triathlon training, living in the north of Scotland we don’t get too many events, although there are a couple next year.
My main question is regarding weight training. I have seen the recommended exercises here, and the 15 reps at a lighter weight, the question I have is when would be a good time to do this? On a day I am not biking, swimming or running? Or could I do a weight session at lunch say, and then tri-train in the evening? Am I right in assuming once a week is more than sufficient?
Any help you can give would be gratefully received.
Also any tips for reading materials, sites aimed at beginners would be great, I bought Joe Friel’s Bible, but it is a bit too scientific for my level (at the moment anyway!!).
