I’m starting out getting in shape for some long races and trying to increase bike time and speed and swim efficiency..i have only raced in 1 sprint tri (1/3mi, 17, 5k) and only trained for about 6 solid weeks from no training out of shape to race day,(it was kind of a bet with my buddy) but now i love it and want to run more.. i am signed up for a duathlon (run/bike) and another small sprint tri in october.. i started training in may of this year and ran my first race in july and i was at about 17 mph’s for the 17 mile hilly ride.. the swim wore me out becuase like i said i had only trained in the water like 15 times (EVER) so it was tough on me.. happy i finished none-the-less my competive nature had me discouraged that i was only at 17 mph’s in that race.. so i was wondering some of yalls times when yall started out and wondering if i am normal, or behind schedule on gaining speed.. total i have put less than 100 miles on my bike.. i have started training very hard now 6-7
days a week now bucause i have high expactations and plan on doing a 70.3 sometime in the next 2 years.. but if yall say yall started out riding 20 mphs at first i might have to push that back a little ha ha

Sarah and I got a Billy Mills over the weekend. For those of you who don’t know who he is shame on you LOL. Actually she didn’t either. He won the biggest upset in Olympic track history by winning the 10,000 meters at the 1964 Tokyo games. There are some vids up on youtube for those who have never seen the race it is trully amazing! He wasn’t even considered a contender and was basically an also ran who managed to hang in with the worlds best runners. He was also Native American who encountered nothing but prejudice his whole career and now speaks out against peoples perceptions and equality for everyone regardless of race, gender or belief. The cool thing was he came to our hometown! There is a new 5k race and the proceeds go to the NOVA corporation that helps Navajo indians gain simple things like plumming and wells and build up their communities. We got to listen to him talk friday and I wouldn’t do his speech justice but it was very moving about what he went th
ru growing up and how people still view him today. The other cool part about friday was we had 2 Olympians in one room. Steve Spence who won a bronze medal at the 1991 Worlds in the marathon and was 12th in the Barcelona Marathon is a local runner and coach of the college team was in attendance. On saturday he was the honorary starter and stood at the finish line and shook everyones hand. After the race he hung out at the awards signing autographs and posing for pictures until the last person left. It was a pretty cool experience to meet someone who has used his achievements to make differences in peoples lives!
As for the race my company had a strong showing winning a few age group awards and Sarah taking the top female by 1:15 seconds. Not bad for taking a month off after LP to let her foot heal! I had 4 runners in the top 23 finishers but the race couldn’t compare to meeting an all around legend!
I am posting some picks of us with Billy After the race too.

Why, exactly, were headphones banned from all USAT events? Was there a particular incident?
I’m just wondering.

stupid question I know but hope you can help. I need a set of headphones I have a hard time wearing ear buds due to cauliflower ear, from wrestling and judo, I can’t find a pair of over ear headphones that will stay in place during my runs and some are to bulky to be worth anything. anyone else have similar issues?

Dear Sir on the Bike Path,
Can you please pull your bike off of the bike path while you light your cigarette and talk on your cell phone? You sat there right in the middle of the path while I tried to ride by with my two children in the trailor behind.
Thank you very kindly.

I hope and pray that everyone stays safe if you live towards Louisana. I can hardly believe that it is going to hit there again.

Went out for a long ride/short run today. My total milage was 60 mile bike, 3 mile run. I noticed that I hit a wall at about mile 40 on the bike. Struggled to the end, almost feeling like I was having a panic attack….wanted to get off my bike sooooo bad! This was not my first long ride, but definetly my worst. After the ride I had hoped to run 6, but only was able to do 3. It was 98 degress with about 90% humidity- miserable! My question is… about how many calories should I have taken in? I was out there for 4hrs. 45 min. total. I ate 2 instant oatmeals and a banana before I went out, 2 gu’s, 2 gatorades, 2 waters, and a PB sandwhich all before the run. Another water during the run. I’m thinking this wasn’t enough…
Any suggestions?

Just before a little race today I was approached by a guy I have known for sometime and again, for about the fifth year in a row, he tells me he wants to do an ironman or iron distance race. The guy has credentials. He’s run a 2:50 marathon and a number of ultra running races including 100 milers and 24 hour races and has been quite successful. The next words out of his mouth bothered me.
He told me he broke ironman down and figues he could go 10 hours or less.
Maybe so BUT, he does not swim and does not and never owned a road bike. He told me he can swim a little and could learn. Although he owns a mountain bike he does not race. He wants to do this iron race next year! The man has never done a triathlon of any distance.
I was shocked by his prediction and told him of a young friend who just finished IM Lake Placid in 9:59 and thought his 10 hour prediction was perhaps a a little fast. He promptly asked the marathon PR of my young friend and when I told him 2:40 he was unbothered. Since I just know the guy I was not about to take time to explain or get in to it with him and wished him luck with his goal. “Yup, good luck with that” and I left.
Was I wrong to think I’d just been dissed?
