Would a surfing wetsuit (long sleeve, 3/2) do the trick?

I’m guessing the answer to the above question is no. Next question:

Is it worth buying one or better to rent for the first few races?

If I wanted to buy, what kinds of stores sell a good variety? I know fit is important, so I don’t want to order online. I’m in Reno, NV, but will be back east in western Massachusetts and the cape next week. If anyone had specific store recommendations, that would be great.
