swimmer’s snorkel

I consider myself to be a decent swimmer…just not very fond of the water. I am always looking for a way to make it a little easier and of course…perfect my form.

I was a little emabarrased to pull out my snorkel out of my tri bag and train with it, but man was I glad I did!!! It really helped me focus on my technique and not have to worry so much about the breathing. Finis makes a great product. Check it out:

adamo bike saddle

Does anyone have experience with this bike saddle? How about the new “Typhoon” model?

http://www.ismseat.com/adamo_typhoon.htm

After riding consistently for 8 years on two different saddles I am eagerly awaiting the Adamo because I have finally accepted the fact that my butt does not agree with a conventional saddle. Typical bike saddles do not contact me on my large “sit bones” but on smaller bones much more inside these larger ones. These smaller bones just can’t take the load for more than 2 hours. The fact I can ever ride that long is amazing in and of itself. The Adamo looks wide enough that it should contact me on the larger bones, plus the cutout in the centre looks as if it will allow my junk to remain unsquashed when in an aero position.

The newest model, the Typhoon, has the most padding of the entire lineup. Funny, every bike shop I’ve ever been in has steered me towards the hardest saddle I can handle. Yet my second saddle, which was the softest, felt the best. Hoping this one is even better.

for the ladies only…..uti

I came down with a UTI (urinary tract infection) within hours of competing in an olympic distance tri this past weekend. What did I do wrong?- I’ve never had this happen after a race before….or so quickly. Aside from the obvious, wet tri suit on a bike seat, what else could have set this off so fast? (nutrition? …or porta-potties????) What are the facts vs. fiction?

wetsuits

I am training for my first triathlon (Chicago) and will be doing the Olympic distance first time out. I have run many marathons and bike frequently but the swim will be my weakest part. Up until I started training, I was a poor swimmer (at best) but have started to improve.

My question concerns wetsuits. I understand they will cause me to be more buoyant in the water, but are there suits that are more buoyant than others? I think I will need the extra buoyancy in the water to get through/survive the swim. Any suggestions? Thanks.

bike training advise

I have been doing triathlons for years, but have never really trained on the bike. I have registered for my first 1/2 Ironman this year and decided I had better put some miles in on my bike. created a training plan off this site. Unfortunately, everything is in time.

So, my question is: If the training plan says 1 1/2 hour on bike, what does that mean? How far do I need to go? Should I be concentrating on speed? What is a decent speed to maintain during training? Should I base it on heart rate? I do not typically train by heart rate. For running and swimming, I just know and train by feel, but for biking I feel lost.

Thanks for the help!!

I know this is an expensive sport and I accept that but trying to book a flight for 2 from boston to hawaii is expensive!!!!! BOHICA….the cheapest I found last week was 722.00 per person (should have booked)…NOW prices are up to anywhere fom $825-1100!!!! what a ripoff…between the coach, wheels for bike, nutrition, condo, rental car, food, ect….. I may have to back out, which sucks! my goal was to raise at least 5,000 grand for charity. Any ideas????? Thanks

mens health forums vs. ontri

I had to share this from last night.

When I first started losing weight I was on the Mens Health Forums asking questions and learning stuff. I guess I can’t knock it too much because I did learn about nutrition and exercise as far as weight loss, but now I look back and laugh at that site. All they are concerned with were their bodies, and didn’t do anything with them except try and look better….I mean that is great and all but if you spend hours in the gym I would hope you were ambitious enough to compete in bodybuilding, those posing things, sports, or endurance sports like ourselves.

Last night I happen to think about how I was amazed at some of these people and how far/fast they ran and how in awww I was of them. Some of them bragged a lot about what they had done that day and how they had done a 1/2 marathon and such. So I decided to go back on there and see how these people were doing. I went straight to the thread that was for their “running club” where they brag on their distances accumulated and P.R.’s. Well after reading through their PR’s I had to post and brag myself for those that always kind of cracked on my training and such.

Let’s just say that those people over there can’t hold a match to what is going on in this world. There was only one person on there who had a better marathon PR than I, and he did this like 10 years ago, and then the one guy that they always go to for advice wasn’t even close to any PR that I have had.

I know I’m not that fast compared to some of the people on here, but I wanted to brag on the ontriers compared to the group over there. I guess they could possibly bench press more than us, but that won’t get them very far when gas hits $5.00 a gallon will it?! Well maybe they could pick up their car and carry it.

women’s biking shorts

I finally got a good pair of Pearl Izumi biking shorts. After using them I was disappointed because the padding made the pressure in the front part of my crotch really uncomfortable while I was riding. Are there any shorts out there that don’t do that? It was better without them.

muscle cramp while swimming-any advice?

Hi! I’m getting ready for a triathlon-I am comfortable in the water, and just joined the YMCA to get some practice in the pool snd improve my technique. It’s been a while since I last swam-I was trying to keep up with a friend, had done a 1/4 mile, then rested, and really pushed off doing the backstroke, and immediately got a wicked cramp in the arch of my left foot. My friend tried to get me to point my toes up-um ow no way! I walked around a bit, took a celebrex, and am wondering how to not let this happen again. Its been 6 hours and the foot still isn’t feeling normal-I wonder if I should take tomorrow off from jogging, then swim on thursday as planned, but how to do it so it doesn’t cramp? TIA, Crystal
