Road Bike - Bianchi Forza w/Shimano Tiagra Kit

So - for this century that I’d like to accomplish in August, I’m going to need a new bike. I’ve been infatuated with my Marin Muirwoods - but that’s not enough horsepower for a long road trip. So, I’m looking for a sub $1000 hot-ass bike. I think the Bianchi Forza is the current front runner for my cycling affections.

Upcoming Races for Consideration

So - I’ve been thinking about what I want to accomplish in the coming months - I need to get in a couple more races - I want to do at least another Sprint Distance Triathlon, and a 5k - and my personal goal is to complete a century bike ride in August.

I’m thinking that the Salty Dog Triathlon will be a good one - it’s far enough out for me to get in decent shape. Of course, in order to get the bike ride portion done, I’d better be in shape for that anyway :)

I’m currently looking for a training plan. I may just go back and look at what I did for the previous race - but I need to get up to a 400m swim, 10.5 mile bike (cake), and 2.5 mile run in a couple months. I really feel like I should be able to knock this one out of the park, and would like to finish the race in under 1:20 this go round.

I’m going to start logging my weights and training - starting tomorrow morning.

Training Playlists

Thanks to the great number of cheap MP3 players out there - being able to take our favorite playlists with us while training has never been easier. (note - it is HIGHLY recommended that you NOT wear headphones while cycling - it is important to hear what is going on around you). Here is my top 5 list of albums that get my blood churning while I’m training:

Rise Against - Siren Song of the Counter Culture
Billy Talent - Billy Talent
Chevelle - Wonder What’s Next
Dispatch - Gut the Van
T.I. - King

There you have it - feel free to leave your favorite Training Playlists in the Comments.

I’m listing this again, because it’s a book that I’m getting. If you’re like me, you have little to no extra time, and you have to make the most of it. So - if you want THE definitive book on time-sensitive training, you should have it.

Journey to another Triathlon

Ok friends and neighbors - here’s the deal. I managed to get 1000% focused on nothing but work for the last 3 months. Something is good about that, but something is bad as well. I had a lot of personal goals that were non-professional that I wanted to accomplish, but failed at those. The up side is that I am in a pretty solid professional situation.

Regardless, it’s time to get back at it. This site is a great help for that. I’ll be coming up with some re-thought out goals and serving those up over the coming weeks.

Also - you should note a few new things I’m doing. Since I love the sport of triathlon so well, I’m going to actually attempt to write more than just my boring old training routines. I’m going to come up some cool new features, not the least of which are the following categories:

Triathlete Profiles - especially Triathlete Women ;)
Equipment Reviews

You’ll also notice that there are few new banners on the side. I picked them out as partners because I think they offer great products at fair prices. If you agree with me, I may make a few bucks, but I doubt I’ll be quitting my day job anytime soon.

Ok kids - back to it. Happy Training!

Jodie Swallow - Female Triathlete

Comments Off

Jodie Swallow Female TriathleteAs a schoolgirl, Jodie began competitive swimming when she was eight years old and won her first national age-group medal at the age of 12. After this, many national junior titles followed in a variety of strokes and she won the senior nationals 400 IM title in 1996. At the same time, Jodie began cross country running and went on to win the National Schools Cross-Country three times, national schools 3000m track twice, and many other national and international titles.

She attended Loughborough University, where she studied physical education and sports science. Her training schedule of around 30-35 hours per week consists of a rest day on Mondays (perhaps a steady run sometimes). Tuesday is a 6km sub-threshold swim in the morning, an hour hill cycle at lunch and a steady run followed by track drills and strides. Wednesday is a 6km pull set in the pool, a two-hour pack ride with other cyclists and an hour’s conditioning work. Thursday is a 6km race-pace swim followed by an hour’s turbo session and an hour’s tempo run in the evening. Friday is a 6km threshold swim, a hills running session, a massage and conditioning for an hour. Saturdays is usually a swim and long cycle day and Sundays a long run and two-hour cycle. Obviously this varies in the training cycles.

Having taken the whole of 2005 for rehabilitation, Swallow has now returned to triathlon adopting a new approach to her sport. She is now being coached by double Olympic Champion Daley Thompson, together with Livio Salvadore, a former international athlete - a move away from the more traditional triathlon coaching with an emphasis on strength and conditioning to reduce her pre-disposition to be injured. She is teaming this with input from experts at the key triathlon disciplines and a top level medical support team and has her sights firmly set on a medal in the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
