Welcome aboard Blaze. He finished his first triathlon, and I know he will do it again.
Now for me, I went into this one with a mission of improving on last years time. Well I did that. This year I came it at 1:12:39 and last year was 1:19:01 so almost a 7 minute improvement. The best thing about this year is I came in 2nd for my age group, but there were only 5 in my age group. I did 49 overall out of over 300. If I had had the same time last year I would have gotten 4th out of all the beginners and this year if I hadn’t done one extra race so I would have still been a beginner I would have gotten 2nd out of the beginners…dang!
Here are last years splits:
Swim Run 1 T1 Bike T2 Run 2 Total
9:32 14:07 1:32 40:57 0:54 12:02 1:19:01
This year:
9:55 13:06 :49 36:29 00:59 11:17 1:12:39.07
For those of you that don’t know how this one works, the 3 mile run is split in 2 1.5 miles. One is right after the swim and the other is right after the bike. I think the swim transition as far as getting shoes and stuff on is figured into the total first run, it’s not that I run faster after biking. haha Well it looks like I’m a slower swimmer, faster runner, a little better at transitions, and my bike what is funny is last year that time was a mountain bike and this year I was on my road bike. I only made up 4 minutes on the bike this year, which is over a mile. This triathlon is just as good for a mountain bike with slicks as a road bike because it is up and down the whole way. Major hills for this bike ride, and I do just as good as climbing on my mountain bike as I do my road bike so I wasn’t really looking to do a ton better on the bike this year. I did want an 8 minute swim, but that didn’t happen as you can see.
I’m still pleased with my placing this year, and if I look at this way as far as if I had an 8 minute swim I would have come in the top 30 this year. Oh the distances were 400 meter (but I always hear really good swimmers say they think this is closer to 450 based on their times), 1.5 mile run, 12 mile bike, and 1.5 mile run.
Talk to you later!

Well the big day is tomorrow. The reunion of the Old Hickory Tri. I assume Scott is still coming in for it, and we have a new fraternity brother (well alumni) that is going to join us. I saw where Josh Blaisdell was signed up for it, and I think he will do really well. Josh is very competitive, and I just hope he doesn’t show me up in his first event. I’m going down there today at 3:30 to crash at his place, and we’ll be at check in at 5:30 today to get our stuff and let him see the course and then we are going to go eat. Randy if you are town then, then holla at us so we can all eat together. I’m not staying tomorrow night, because I want to come back to Murray and celebrate and crash in my bed since I don’t get to sleep in it much during the fall due to travel.
Well I’m not nervous yet, and really just excited to see if I’m any better than I was last year. This week consisted of a 6 mile run on Mon, 12 mile run on Tues (getting ready for my marathon in Dec), a 21 mile bike on Wed. and a 1 mile swim yesterday. All of them seemed really comfortable and not too bad, so I hope I’m ready. I know I averaged 19.6 mph on the bike which is really good for me when I’m out doing it alone, so I’m hoping for a 20 or more average tomorrow so I can come in 36 minutes on the bike. I’m also going to try and sprint the last 1.5 miles of the run so it can be around a 8-9 minute 1.5 mile to help get my times down.
Oh one last thing, I’m running another 1/2 marathon on September 17th in St. Charles, MO because Dean Karanzee is using this marathon as one of his Endurance 50 runs where he is running 50 marathons in 50 days in 50 states. So I’m doing this just so I have a chance to see/meet him. I’m scheduled for a 16 mile training run that day anyhow, so the race venue is always good practice then I can do another 3 miles later in the day.
I’m outtie

I thought this was cool. I found this site that I use where I enter my bike, swim, run workouts and it keeps up with a total mileage for weeks, months, years, etc. and compares you against other people on the site. Needless to say that some of them are training for Ironmen.
What I thought was cool is that I started this site on June 24 of logging workouts. So in less that 2 months, today makes 1 month and 3 weeks I have totalled 731 miles in the water, biking, or swimming. 517 on bike, 199 on foot, and 15 in the water. 731 miles is further than from here to Dallas. I hope I can say I reach California by Christmas time. It also says I’ve burnt46,574 calories. It doesn’t count them as high as treadmills and stuff does, nor does it count lifting so I’ve actually burnt more than that.
It’s just neat to breakdown.

Well don’t run 11 miles and then go party. Alcohol isn’t the best rehydrater in the world. Not only did I have a crappy weekend because of “the girl” not working out, I had a crappier weekend beginning Saturday night. I mean I was told by my friends that I was the man on the dance floor and with the ladies, but I don’t remember it. Oh, and I lost my wallet. I got ahold of Gilkey at 4:30 am to get a ride back to his house and I didn’t have a shirt when he got to me, no sunglasses that I had been wearing, a broken watch, and no WALLET.
Life sucks!

Sorry folks - I’ve been lazy about posting….but I have not been slacking off, that’s for sure.
I’ve been concentrating on running, because that is my weakness, and that is where I need the most work. Monday, I hit the treadmill for a 1.5 mile hard run, 5 minutes of walking, then another hard 1.5 mile run. Because of some biking problems, I ended up trying to run a very hard 3 mile course on Tuesday, and I struggled with exhaustion and cramping the entire time. I took Wednesday off, the was back in the gym on Thursday for a 30 minute bike ride, followed by a 30 minute elliptical machine workout. I took Friday off, then, after a very fun Friday night, went to the treadmill on Saturday for a 25 minute run, which ended up being about 2.25 miles. Like LJ said, it’s easy to run when you’re pissed.
Tommorrow will be a swim workout, provided I go to get some new goggles…….I can’t wait to hit Nashville in a few weeks.

Well I’m in Louisville at Gilkey’s because the date was spectacular, however it ended poorly. We had a great time Friday night and she even said she had never had a time like this with a guy or felt so comfortable on a first date. We danced, kissed, etc. and then at the end of the night she was acting weird. So I just asked what was going through her head and she said it was complicated. She met me 3 weeks ago and then 2 weeks later she meets this other guy who had a motorcycle wreck around Mother’s Day and had a halo on (angel I guess, haha). Anyhow she likes both of us and doesn’t know what to do. I told her I had a great time with her, got back to her place and called Gilkey to let him know I would be crashing at his place. She was like don’t go, ladida. I told her that I would make the decision easy for her because I don’t play these games. She has too much on her head for me to stay the night and just keep her head screwed up. She proceeded to tease to try and get me to stay (now I wish I had just one and done it, haha but I’m a nice guy). She was like what if I wake up in a few days and realize that I would never meet anyone like you again, and I just told her that everything happens for a reason and we don’t know what it is but I’m not staying.
So this morning I got up to do a 4-5 mile run and sweat tons of beer/bourbon out. Well I guess running is much easier when you are pissed or shafted, because the miles just clicked off until I had ran 11 miles. It was the easiest 11 I had ever ran, and I still have energy and not even sore. I’m hitting 4th Street up tonight with 2 things in my mind, throwdown hard and find something easy, haha. Just playing, well maybe not.

Scott:
Sign up for Old Hickory. The price goes up after the 12th. Also what about a hotel? Do you all not want to stay at that Holiday Inn where the race begins?
Have fun training!

Really good workout the last couple of days. Sunday semi-officially began my marathon training. My program wasn’t suppose to start for another 2 weeks, but the girl I’m training with had her first long run this past weekend. I agreed to do it with her, because hey it couldn’t hurt me. We did 10 miles on Sunday morning at 7 am, well I did 10 and she did 6. It was a pretty nice morning, little warm but tolerable. At 5.8 miles she just couldn’t go any further so she just told me to push on if I wanted to and she would walk back to the cars. I felt good so I took off and cranked the pace up a little bit. When running with her we were around a 9:10 pace (good for 10 miles), but when I left her at the 6 mile point I turned in a 8:45 pace over the next 4 miles. I finished a little weak, but could have pulled out another few miles if I needed to.
Yesterday was a good brick session. It was HOT, but one of my buddies invited me on a 25 mile ride with him and another guy. I enjoy riding with people and eventhough it was suppose to be just a lifting and short run day, I decided to join them. I lifted at lunchtime, then at 4:30 I rode over to Ricky’s house and we all 3 headed out on the 25 miler at around 5 pm. It was fun pushing ourselves and racing (real good practice for competition), and then Ricky and I did a 3 mile brick run afterwards with a 8:15 pace on those miles. We actually averaged right around 21 mph for the 25 mile ride as well. The 3rd guy with us must have thought I was a good rider, because he assumed I averaged 21 mph on all my rides. I told him that I didn’t, but it was fun riding with other riders and that pushed me because I wanted to lead the peloton, haha. So after this was all over I still had a 4 mile ride back to my house.
The rest of the week:
Today -35 min swim, training calls for 45 minutes on the bike, but I will probably go longer just for fun (I hate getting dressed and out for short rides)
Wed-Lift, Swim 30 minutes, run 30 minutes
Thursday-Swim 25, Bike 50, run 20
Friday-Lift and 30 minute run
Saturday 39 minute run
Sunday off.

Looking forward to OH with Scott again!

It’s been pretty miserable here in KC - so we’ve been forced to spend all our training time in the gym - I headed out today around 5 to hit it up for a few hours.
I started out with a (surprisingly) easy 2 mile run, then followed that up with a 400m swim (9:23 - heck yeah), then a set of 4×50m. All in all, I didn’t get winded much in the pool - that’s really good news. I did however, have a fair amount of pain in my shoulders….here’s hoping that still wear and tear from tubing this weekend.
Anyway - training is going great - I’m about 7 pounds down from 3 weeks ago, and look a lot leaner already. I will say that having an awesome training partner is helping me out a lot - she’s not easy on me at all.
I’m pretty psyched to be in better shape already than I was last year, after minimal training - that tells me one thing…we didn’t go hard enough last summer. It’s all good though - we’re getting there, and we’re already looking for a new race - and planning for a big season next summer.
I’m looking into hotel info tommorrow, so I’ll get with you LJ.
